History of Ottawa

The town of Ottawa got its name from the Ottawa, a group of Native American people.

Ottawa covers about 34.9 square miles (90.4 square kilometers) in total. Most of this area, about 34.3 square miles (88.9 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.6 square miles (1.6 square kilometers), is water. This means a small part of the town is made up of lakes or rivers.

October 2019 Tornado Event

On October 1, 2019, a tornado passed through the Town of Ottawa. This tornado was classified as an EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita scale. Its winds were estimated to be around 100 miles per hour.

The tornado traveled for about 13 miles (20.9 kilometers). It was about 100 yards (91.4 meters) wide. Along its path, it knocked down many trees and snapped power lines. Luckily, damage to buildings was not very severe. The worst damage was a shed's roof being torn off and carried a quarter-mile away. No one was hurt or killed during this storm.
