The Otterhead Lakes are two beautiful lakes in Somerset, England. They are found in the Blackdown Hills area, which is a special place known for its natural beauty. These lakes are actually reservoirs, which means they were built to store water.

The lakes are fed by the River Otter. They are looked after by the Otterhead Estate Trust Company Limited, working with the Somerset Wildlife Trust. This helps protect the area's nature. The lakes are also a Local Nature Reserve, which means they are important for wildlife.

History of Otterhead Lakes

The Otterhead Lakes are what is left of a much larger garden. This garden belonged to Otterhead House. The house was built in 1845 by William Beadon. It had many pools and beautiful landscaped areas.

Sadly, Otterhead House was taken down in 1952. But the two main lakes remained. Today, they are the heart of the Otterhead Local Nature Reserve. This reserve stretches for about one mile.

A Special Nature Reserve

The Otterhead Local Nature Reserve is a wonderful place to explore. It includes different types of woodland. Some areas are dry, and others are more moist. This means many different plants can grow there.

Plants You Might See

In the dry parts of the woods, you can find pretty common bluebells. You might also spot dogs mercury and twayblade. These plants grow close to the ground.

In the wetter areas, you can see marsh pennywort. There is also the amazing royal fern. You might also find rhododendron and sycamore trees.

Amazing Animals

The woods around the lakes are home to many animals. You might find tiny dormice sleeping in their nests. Badgers also live here, often coming out at night. Many types of bats fly around at dusk.

Bird watchers will love the lakes too. You can often see a bright kingfisher darting over the water. Dippers bob on the rocks in the river. And wagtails can be seen walking along the shore.

Fun Activities at the Lakes

The Otterhead Lakes are not just for wildlife. They are also a place where people can enjoy nature.

Fishing for Trout

The lakes are home to wild brown trout. These fish are a type of salmon. People who enjoy fly fishing often come here. It's a peaceful way to spend time outdoors.
