Sir Oudart I de Renti (who passed away around 1370) was a French nobleman. He held the titles of Lord of Embry, Curlu, Affringues, and Vaudringhem.

A Nobleman's Journey

Oudart I de Renti was the son of Baudouin I de Renty and Gertrude de Flavy. His father was the Lord of Renty, and his mother was the Lady of Aix-en-Boulonnais.

Early Challenges

At one point, Oudart was forced to leave France. This happened because he supported Robert de Artois. After this, he became involved with the English and the people of Flanders.

In 1347, Oudart led a Flemish army in a battle, but they were defeated. Despite this, King Philip VI of France later forgave him. Oudart then changed his loyalty back to the French side.

The Calais Incident

In 1349, Oudart joined other French nobles in a plan to take back the city of Calais. They tried to trick Amerigo of Pavia, an Italian officer guarding the city. The plan was to bribe Amerigo to open a gate for them.

Oudart led the group that entered through Amerigo's gate. However, it was a trap! As soon as they were inside the gatehouse, the drawbridge suddenly went up. A heavy gate, called a portcullis, dropped in front of them. Sixty English soldiers then surrounded them. Amerigo had betrayed the French to King Edward III of England.

Oudart and all the French soldiers who had entered the gatehouse were captured. A big fight, known as the Battle outside the gates of Calais, then happened. Many French soldiers lost their lives, and others were captured. This included the French commander, Geoffrey de Charny.

Later Life and Loyalty

Years later, in 1364, Oudart was given an important job. He was made the governor of Tournai.

By 1370, he also promised his support to Bertrand du Guesclin. Bertrand du Guesclin was a very important military leader in France, known as the Constable of France. He wanted to remove the English from France, and Oudart helped him in this goal.

Family Life

Oudart I de Renti married a woman named Jeanne Catherine. She was the daughter of François, Lord of Azincourt, and Clotilde de Cavron. Together, they had several children:

  • Oudart II de Renti (who passed away on October 25, 1415). He married Jeanne de Bournonville and had children.
  • Marie-Isabeau de Renti (who passed away in 1377). She married Hugues de Ricametz and had children.
  • Jean de Renti (who passed away on October 25, 1415).
