Oudart I de Renti
Born c.1310
Artois, France
Died c.1370
France

Sir Oudart I de Renti (died around 1370) was a French nobleman. He was the Lord of several places, including Embry, Curlu, Affringues, and Vaudringhem.

Life of Oudart de Renti

Oudart was the son of Baudouin I de Renty and Gertrude de Flavy. His father was the Lord of Renty, and his mother was the Lady of Aix-en-Boulonnais.

Early Challenges and Changing Sides

Oudart was once a supporter of Robert de Artois. Because of this, he was forced to leave France. He then started working with the English and the Flemish people.

In 1347, Oudart led a Flemish army in a battle, but they were defeated. After this loss, King Philip VI of France forgave him. Oudart then changed his loyalty back to the French side.

The Trap at Calais in 1349

In 1349, Oudart joined other French nobles in a plan to take back the city of Calais. They tried to bribe Amerigo of Pavia, an Italian officer guarding the city. Amerigo was supposed to open a gate for them.

Oudart led the French soldiers who entered through Amerigo's gate. But as soon as they were inside the gatehouse, a trap was sprung. The drawbridge suddenly went up, and a heavy gate (called a portcullis) dropped down. Sixty English soldiers surrounded them.

Amerigo had tricked the French. He had actually betrayed them to King Edward III of England. Oudart and all the French soldiers who entered the gatehouse were captured.

The Battle Outside Calais

A bigger battle happened outside the gates of Calais. Many French soldiers died, and others were captured. This included the French commander, Geoffrey de Charny.

Later Years and Support for France

In 1364, Oudart was made the governor of Tournai. This was an important leadership role.

In 1370, he also promised his support to Bertrand du Guesclin. Bertrand du Guesclin was the Constable of France, a very high military position. He wanted to force the English out of France.

Family and Children

Oudart married a woman named Jeanne Catherine. She was the daughter of François, Lord of Azincourt, and Clotilde de Cavron. They had the following children:

  • Oudart II de Renti (died October 25, 1415). He married Jeanne de Bournonville and had children.
  • Marie-Isabeau de Renti (died 1377). She married Hugues de Ricametz and had children.
  • Jean de Renti (died October 25, 1415).
