Overdinkel is a village located in the eastern part of the Netherlands. It's part of the Twente region and belongs to the municipality of Losser. The village gets its name from the nearby Dinkel river. In 2012, about 4,255 people lived here. Overdinkel is special because it's very close to the German border, where the Netherlands meets the German states of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.
A Look Back at Overdinkel's History
Overdinkel started as a small farming community. It was once a quiet area with lots of open land, like heath and sand dunes. In the early 1900s, the village began to grow. This was because many people moved there to work in the textile factories in Gronau, a town just across the border in Germany. Workers came from all over the Netherlands and Germany to live in Overdinkel.
After the Second World War, the textile industry in the region started to slow down. Because of this, the number of people living in Overdinkel is expected to decrease. However, the village has found new ways to grow. The hospitality industry, which includes hotels, restaurants, and places for visitors, has become more important. This is partly because Overdinkel is so close to Germany, making it a good spot for tourism. A group of nuns, called the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, also started a community in Overdinkel in 1919.
Getting Around and Local Spots
