Oxelösund Municipality (Oxelösunds kommun) is a special area in Södermanland County, located in southeast Sweden. It's like a small local government area. The main town, or "seat," of this municipality is Oxelösund.
Back in 1950, a place called Nikolai Rural Municipality was split up. Part of it became the City of Oxelösund. This was one of the last new cities created in Sweden. The rest of Nikolai joined the nearby city of Nyköping. In 1971, Oxelösund became a single municipality without adding any new land.
Because of its history, Oxelösund has always been known for its industries. The local government was mostly run by the Social Democratic Party. The main industries were the busy harbor and the iron works.
