Oyster Cove is a small area in Tasmania, Australia. It is located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south-west of Kingston. In 2016, 319 people lived there. Oyster Cove is special because part of it is an Indigenous Protected Area. This means it is a place managed by Aboriginal people to protect their culture and nature. It has a very important history for Aboriginal Tasmanians.

The History of Oyster Cove

Oyster Cove became an official place name in 1968. Before that, it was a place where convicts lived and worked.

Aboriginal History and Land Return

In 1847, a sad event happened. About 47 Aboriginal Tasmanians were moved to Oyster Cove. These were people who had survived being forced to leave their homes and move to Flinders Island. Oyster Cove became a place where they were held.

However, in 1995, something very important happened. The land at Oyster Cove was given back to the Aboriginal people of Tasmania. This was done through a special law called the Aboriginal Lands Act 1995. Then, in 1999, Oyster Cove was officially named an Indigenous Protected Area. This helps protect its cultural importance and natural environment for future generations.

First Women's Cricket League

Oyster Cove also has a cool sports history! In 1894, a teacher named Lily Poulett-Harris started the very first women's cricket league in Australia right here. It was called The Oyster Cove Ladies Club.

Geography of Oyster Cove

Oyster Cove is located next to the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. This channel forms the eastern edge of the area.
