Pachapaqui is a small village located in the northern part of the Aquia District in the Bolognesi Province of the Ancash Region, Peru. About 1,000 people live here. Most residents work with animals like cattle and sheep, or they grow crops on a small scale.

Where is Pachapaqui?

Pachapaqui is found at a high altitude of 3,800 meters (about 12,467 feet) above sea level. It sits on a flat area on the western side of the Pativilca River.

It's about 350 kilometers (217 miles) from Lima, the capital city of Peru. The town of Huaraz in the Callejón de Huaylas is 80 kilometers (50 miles) away. Barranca is 160 kilometers (99 miles) from Pachapaqui.

Pachapaqui's Climate

Because Pachapaqui is so high up, it has a cool climate. The average temperature is around 12 °C (54 °F) each year.

The weather is usually dry from May to October. Rain falls mostly from October to April. Sometimes, there can be frost in June, July, and August. The rainiest time is from December to March, with heavy rainfall and often fog that can stay in the valleys all day.

Even during the dry season, in July and August, you might see some short rains and clouds.

Languages Spoken in Pachapaqui

About 50 years ago, most people in Pachapaqui spoke Quechua, especially the kind spoken in Ancash. Today, Spanish is the main language.

Many new people have moved to Pachapaqui from the coast, and they mostly speak Spanish. Because of this, only older people tend to speak Quechua now.

Fun Things to Do in Pachapaqui

  • Sacred Heart Festival: From July 4th to 8th, the village celebrates the feast in honor of the Sacred Heart. It's a special time with traditions and activities.
  • Visit the Puya Raimondii: Pachapaqui is a great starting point to see the amazing Puya raimondii plants. These are giant plants that can grow very tall.
  • Christmas Celebrations: From December 24th to 26th, Christmas is celebrated with traditional dances from the Ancash Region.

Getting to Pachapaqui

You can reach Pachapaqui in a few ways:

  • From Lima: Drive north from Lima on the Pan-American Highway for about 200 kilometers (124 miles) until you reach Paramonga. Then, turn towards Chasquitambo and follow a paved road that goes up to Conococha. From there, take the road towards the Antamina highway.
  • From Huaraz: If you are coming from Huaraz, you will turn off at the town of Conococha (which is 4,100 meters high). From there, take the road that leads to Antamina.
  • From Huánuco: If you are in La Union, you can take a bus that goes towards Lima.

All the roads mentioned above are paved, making the journey smoother.
