Paillaco is a city and a "commune" in southern Chile. A commune is like a local area that has its own government. Paillaco is found in the Valdivia Province of the Los Ríos Region. It is about 48 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of the city of Valdivia.

Who Lives in Paillaco?
Every few years, countries count their people. This is called a census. In 2002, a census showed that about 19,237 people lived in Paillaco. Almost half of these people (9,973) lived in the city part. The other half (9,264) lived in the countryside around the city. Between 1992 and 2002, the number of people living in Paillaco grew by 6%.
How Paillaco is Governed
Paillaco is managed by a local government called a municipal council. This council is led by a person called an "alcalde" (which is like a mayor). The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.

From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde of Paillaco was Ramona Reyes. The municipal council works with the alcalde to make decisions for the commune. The council members during that time included:

In the past, Paillaco had a German school called Deutsche Schule Paillaco. This shows that different cultures have been a part of the community's history.
