History of Palermo
Palermo got its name from a city in Sicily, Italy. This was because the climate in Palermo, California, was perfect for growing olives, just like in Sicily.
Early Days and Growth
The first post office in Palermo opened in 1888. Back then, Palermo was a busy place! It had a country club, two train stations, and even gold mining. There was also a brick yard, a library, a general store, and a school. The community even had its own semi-professional baseball team.
The rich clay soil in the area was great for farming. People planted many olive and orange orchards. They also grew a special type of squash called zucca melon.
In 1888, a rich mining leader named George Hearst bought a large piece of land, about 700 acres. He then divided it into smaller plots for people to buy.

Today, Palermo still celebrates its community. Every September, there's an annual festival held at Palermo Park. This festival helps raise money to support the Palermo Community Council's Sheriff Substation, which helps keep the area safe.
