History of Palmyra, Utah

Palmyra is located about seven miles south of Provo. It was started in 1852 along the Spanish Fork River. The leaders of the Utah territory officially made it a city in January 1853.

In March 1853, a religious leader named Stephen Markham was chosen to lead the local church group. However, the town was later left empty around 1856. This happened because Brigham Young, a prominent leader, advised people to move. Most settlers moved further up the river. They went to the place where Spanish Fork is today. The area of Palmyra was settled again much later, around the year 1900.
