A Look Back in Time
Panama was started in the early 1900s. A company from Chicago called the Shoal Creek Coal Company dug a coal mine shaft here. This big digging project was finished in 1906. Many people from Europe came to live and work in Panama during this time.
Where is Panama Located?
Panama is right on the edge of Bond and Montgomery counties. It is about 11 miles (18 km) south of Hillsboro. Hillsboro is the main town for Montgomery County. Panama is also about 16 miles (26 km) northwest of Greenville, which is the main town for Bond County.
Land and Water Around Panama
The village of Panama covers about 0.37 square miles (0.95 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a tiny bit, about 0.002 square miles (0.005 square kilometers), is water.
Panama is built on a low ridge. To the west, there is a stream called Shoal Creek. To the east, there is another stream called Bearcat Creek. Shoal Creek flows south and eventually joins the Kaskaskia River.
