The Story of Panguitch Lake

The name Panguitch comes from the Paiute Indian language. It means "big fish." This shows that the Paiute people used the lake for fishing a long time ago.

Protecting the Fish

In 2006, something special happened at the lake. Scientists treated the lake with a substance called rotenone. This was done to help control an unwanted fish called the Utah chub. These chub fish were probably brought to the lake by accident. Fishermen might have used them as live bait.

After the treatment, the lake was restocked with new fish. About 20,000 rainbow trout were added in 2006. By 2016, the number of fish in the lake had fully recovered. This means Panguitch Lake is still a great place for fishing today!
