Es Pantaleu (which is Catalan) or El Pantaleu (which is Spanish) is a tiny, uninhabited islet. An islet is a very small island. It is part of the Balearic Islands in Spain. You can find it just off the west coast of Majorca.
Today, Es Pantaleu is a natural park. It is part of the larger natural park of its nearby island, Dragonera. The islet is about 0.024 square kilometers in size. Its highest point is 26 meters above sea level.
About Es Pantaleu
Where is this Islet?
Es Pantaleu is part of a long chain of mountains. This chain runs from southwest to northeast across the Iberian Peninsula. It starts in the Province of Málaga and goes through Cap de la Nau. Then, it dips under the Mediterranean Sea.
This mountain chain then comes back up to form the island of Ibiza. It also forms the Tramuntana Range on the island of Majorca. And, of course, it forms Es Pantaleu itself!
The islet belongs to the town of Andratx. This town, along with Sant Elm, is on nearby Majorca. They are the closest towns to Es Pantaleu.
A Look Back in Time
Es Pantaleu became important in history in the year 1229. In September of that year, James I of Aragon was a king. He stopped his ships near this island to keep them safe from a storm. From here, his men explored the coast of Majorca.
They chose a beach near what is now Santa Ponça as a good place to land. This was the start of the Reconquista of the Balearic Islands. The Reconquista was a long period when Christian kingdoms took back land from Muslim rule in Spain. The gulf of Sant Elm was a good spot for defense.
Es Pantaleu is about 300 meters from the beach of Sant Elm. It used to be a popular place for good swimmers to visit. However, since 1998, it has been part of the Dragonera nature reserve. This means you are not allowed to go onto the island anymore. It is protected to keep its nature safe.
