Parimarjan Negi (born on February 9, 1993) is a talented Indian chess grandmaster. A grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can achieve.
He earned this special title when he was just 13 years, 4 months, and 20 days old. At that time, he was the second youngest grandmaster ever! As of July 2025, he is the ninth youngest player to achieve this amazing feat.
Parimarjan Negi has won championships for India and Asia. He also played a key role for the Indian team at the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway. His team won a bronze medal there. In 2010, the Government of India honored him with the Arjuna Award for his achievements in sports.

Parimarjan Negi's Chess Journey
Early Success in Chess
Parimarjan Negi started showing his chess skills early. In 2002, he won the under-10 division at the Asian Youth Chess Championship in Tehran. This was a big step in his young career.
He earned his first grandmaster "norm" at the 2005/06 Hastings International Chess Congress. A norm is a high-level performance needed to become a grandmaster. Soon after, he got his second GM norm at a tournament in Delhi.
Becoming a Grandmaster
Negi earned his third and final GM norm on July 1, 2006. He did this by drawing a game with Russian Grandmaster Ruslan Shcherbakov. This happened at a championship in Satka, Russia.
By achieving this, Negi became the youngest chess grandmaster in India. He broke the record set by Pentala Harikrishna. He was also the second youngest grandmaster in the world at that time.
Major Tournament Wins
In June 2008, Negi won the strong Philadelphia International Open Tournament. He scored 7 out of 9 points and did not lose any games. Later that year, in August 2008, he finished second at the World Junior Chess Championship.
In 2009, he won the Politiken Cup in Copenhagen. He scored 8.5 out of 10 points. He also won the 6th IGB Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur that same year.
On December 22, 2010, Parimarjan Negi won the 48th National Premier Chess Championship in New Delhi.
In 2012, Negi won the 11th Asian Chess Championship in Ho Chi Minh City. He also tied for first place at the Cappelle-la-Grande Open in both 2012 and 2013. In 2013, he won the Politiken Cup for the second time.
By 2017, Parimarjan Negi decided to step away from professional chess.
Personal Life and Education
Parimarjan Negi went to school at Amity International School in New Delhi. After that, he attended Stanford University, where he studied Mathematics. He graduated from Stanford in 2018.
As of July 2021, he is a student working on his PhD. He is studying at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
