Parimarjan Negi (born on February 9, 1993) is an Indian chess player. He is a Grandmaster, which is the highest title a chess player can earn.
He became a Grandmaster when he was just 13 years, 4 months, and 20 days old. At that time, he was the second youngest Grandmaster in history! As of 2023, he is the seventh youngest player to achieve this amazing feat.
Parimarjan Negi has won championships in India and across Asia. He also played for the Indian team that won a bronze medal at the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Norway. In 2010, the Indian government honored him with the Arjuna Award for his achievements in sports.
Becoming a Chess Star
Parimarjan Negi started showing his talent in chess at a young age. In 2002, he won the under-10 section at the Asian Youth Chess Championship held in Tehran.
To become a Grandmaster, a player needs to achieve certain high-level results called "norms." Parimarjan earned his first Grandmaster norm at the Hastings International Chess Congress in 2005/2006. Soon after, he got his second norm at a tournament in Delhi.
He earned his third and final Grandmaster norm on July 1, 2006. This happened when he played against Russian Grandmaster Ruslan Shcherbakov in Russia. By earning this norm, Parimarjan became the youngest chess Grandmaster in India's history. He broke the record set by Pentala Harikrishna.
Winning Tournaments
Parimarjan continued to win many important tournaments. In June 2008, he won the Philadelphia International Open Tournament in the United States. He played nine games and didn't lose any! Later that year, he came in second place at the World Junior Chess Championship.
In 2009, he won the Politiken Cup in Denmark. He also won the Dato' Arthur Tan Malaysia Open in Kuala Lumpur. On December 22, 2010, Parimarjan Negi won the 48th National Premier Chess Championship in New Delhi.
In 2012, he won the 11th Asian Chess Championship in Vietnam. He also tied for first place in the Cappelle-la-Grande Open in both 2012 and 2013. In 2013, he won the Politiken Cup for the second time.
By 2017, Parimarjan Negi decided to step away from playing professional chess.
Life Outside Chess
Parimarjan Negi went to school at Amity International School in New Delhi. He then studied Mathematics at Stanford University and graduated in 2018.
As of 2021, he is studying for his PhD at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
