The Paris Métro (pronounced "MAY-tro") is a famous underground train system in Paris, France. Most of its tracks and stations are built below the city streets. It's also known as the Métropolitain.
This system has 19 different lines, stretching for about 214 kilometers (133 miles). You can find 303 stations across the network. Most lines are run by RATP, a public transport company.
The Paris Métro is a well-known symbol of the city. Many of its older entrances have beautiful Art Nouveau designs. It is one of the busiest metro systems in Europe, carrying millions of passengers every day.
The very first line of the Métro opened on July 19, 1900. This was during the 1900 World's Fair, a big international event held in Paris. The system grew quickly, with many lines completed by the 1920s. In the 1930s, new lines were added to reach the suburbs outside the city center.
