Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Parmo, also known as Teesside Parmesan, is a yummy dish that comes from Middlesbrough in North Yorkshire, England. It's a very popular take-away food in the Teesside area. Imagine a piece of chicken or pork that's been breaded, like a giant chicken nugget. Then, it's covered with a creamy white béchamel sauce and topped with cheese, usually cheddar cheese.

The name "Parmo" sounds a bit like "Parmesan," and it's a nod to another dish called chicken parmigiana. That dish is made with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. In a survey done in April 2019, Parmo was so popular it ranked 20th among Britain's Top 20 Favourite Takeaways!

History of Parmo

How Parmo Started

Many people believe that Parmo was first created by a chef named Nicos Harris. He was a chef with the United States Army during World War II. Nicos was hurt in France during the war and was brought to a hospital in the United Kingdom for treatment.

After the war, he moved to Middlesbrough and opened his own restaurant called The American Grill on Linthorpe Road. It was there, in 1958, that he invented the Parmo! His son-in-law, Caramello, was still living in Teesside in 2014, keeping the family's food tradition alive.

Parmo in Supermarkets

In 2009, a big supermarket chain called Asda started selling Parmo in their stores around Teesside. They said they were selling about 6,000 chicken Parmos every week! This made Parmo their fastest-selling item at the time. Because it was so popular, Asda later started selling Parmo in their stores outside of Teesside too.

Parmo and Nutrition

In 2007, a group called North Yorkshire Trading Standards looked at 25 different fast food dishes. They found that a large Parmo served with chips and salad had about 2,600 calories. It also contained around 150 grams of fat. This shows that Parmo is a very filling and rich meal, often enjoyed as a special treat!
