Parque Posadas
The Parque Posadas residential complex

The Parque Posadas (which means Posadas Park in English) is a huge apartment complex located right in the middle of Montevideo, Uruguay. It was built between 1969 and 1973. The first apartments were ready in 1973, but the whole complex officially opened on August 25, 1975. This large community has its own shared hall, a library, a shopping mall, and even a school. Around Parque Posadas, you can find many homes, a highschool, and different shops like bakeries, restaurants, ice cream shops, and a big supermarket.

The complex is made up of 10 groups of buildings, called blocks. Each block has 6 or 7 tall towers. These towers can be 13, 14, or 15 floors high, depending on how the internal streets are angled.

More than 7,000 people live in the 2,051 apartments here. These apartments have 1, 2, 3, or 4 rooms. There are 61 towers in total, spread across an area of 11 hectares (which is about 3.4 square kilometers). Most people (80%) own their apartments.

The library at Parque Posadas is very special. It has over 35,000 books! This makes it the most important private library in all of Uruguay.

How Parque Posadas Was Built

The idea for building homes in this area started with a plan. The goal was to create housing for 400 older adults. This plan included many services for them, like doctors, a cinema, a gym, libraries, and places to relax and shop.

However, by 1969, a new national housing plan was approved. It became clear that such a large area (11 hectares) should be used for more people. So, the idea changed. The location was perfect for building many homes because it was central and had many services nearby.

This led to a new plan. It aimed to build 2,051 apartments that could house up to 10,000 people. The designers of Parque Posadas thought carefully about several things. They wanted to make sure all apartments had excellent natural light. They also planned the complex to protect the older trees and create a pleasant environment.

Community Life and Management

Parque Posadas has a special way of being managed. There's a Central Assembly that helps run things. This assembly includes one person chosen from each tower. It also has a president, a vice-president, and a secretary.

Each tower also has its own small group of three members who help manage it. The person in charge of each tower is called the Assembly's delegate. This delegate also works with an accountant to handle the money and general running of the complex.Kids robot.svg In Spanish: Parque Posadas para niños
