Pashayi is a language spoken by the Pashai people in parts of northeastern Afghanistan. It is also sometimes called Pashai.
This language is spoken in several provinces, including Kapisa, Laghman, Nuristan, Kunar, and Nangarhar.
About the Pashayi Language
More than 216,000 people speak Pashayi. Most of these speakers follow the Islamic faith.
Many Pashayi speakers are bilingual. This means they can speak two languages, Pashayi and Pashto.
Before 2003, the Pashayi language was not written down. Today, only about 25% of Pashayi speakers can read and write.
