Passo Fundo is a city in the northern part of Rio Grande do Sul, a state in southern Brazil. Its name comes from a nearby river. It is the tenth largest city in the state. About 204,722 people live there, and the city covers an area of about 780 square kilometers.
Passo Fundo is well-known because of a famous singer, composer, and filmmaker named Teixeirinha. He was born in another city but loved Passo Fundo very much. In 1960, he wrote a popular song called "Gaúcho de Passo Fundo." This song helped make Passo Fundo famous across Brazil. Teixeirinha also wrote two more songs about the city: "Saudades de Passo Fundo" (1963) and "Passo Fundo do Coração" (1973). He even made a movie set in the city, called "O Gaucho de Passo Fundo," which came out in 1978.

Passo Fundo's Economy
The economy of Passo Fundo mostly relies on services, like shops and businesses. There are also some light industries and farming in the areas around the city. Many people work in stores, public services, education, and healthcare.
In farming, there is some cattle raising, but not a lot because the city area is small. Raising chickens is more important here. The main crops grown are corn, soybeans, and wheat. In 2006, there were almost 900 farms, and most of the workers were family members of the farm owners.
What Makes Passo Fundo Special
Passo Fundo is often called "A Terra de Gente Boa," which means "The Land of Good People." It's known as one of the most "gaúcho" cities in Rio Grande do Sul. You might often see people walking around in traditional gaúcho costumes called pilcha.
The city is also known as the National Capital of Literature in Brazil. This is because of the many literary events and discussions held there, like the National Journey of Literature. People in Passo Fundo read a lot, averaging about 6.5 books per person each year!
