Pat & Mat is a funny stop-motion cartoon series from Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia). It was created by Lubomír Beneš and Vladimír Jiránek. The show is about two clumsy but clever handymen, Pat and Mat. They try to fix things around their house, but usually make a bigger mess first!

The characters first appeared in a short film called Kuťáci (Tinkers) in 1976. The first TV episode, Tapety (Wallpaper), came out in 1979. As of 2020, there are 129 episodes. The show is popular worldwide because it has no talking, so everyone can understand it!

What's in a Name?

The series was first called Kuťáci, which means The Tinkers. When episodes started being made for Slovak TV, they needed a Slovak name. They chose ... a je to!, meaning ... and that's it!.

The characters didn't have names until 1989. That's when they became Pat and Mat. These names are short versions of Czech words. Patlal means Clumsy, and Matlal means Awkward. The creators wanted names that would work for people all over the world.

About the Show

In each episode, Pat and Mat usually create their own problems. Then, they try to solve them using all sorts of tools and inventions. Their ideas often seem to work at first. But then, everything goes wrong, making even bigger problems!

However, Pat and Mat always find a way to fix things in the end. Their solutions are often surprising and very creative. After they finish, they shake hands. Then, they do their special hand gesture with a bent hand and closed fist.

The creators say that the show's stories come from how bad they are at doing things with their hands. Besides being funny, the show also teaches us to be positive. Pat and Mat always get into trouble. But they never give up until they solve the problem in their own unique ways.

The show also has a famous soundtrack. It was made by Petr Skoumal. The main parts are the catchy theme song and a fun harmonica tune.

Awards and Recognition

Many Pat & Mat episodes have won awards at international animation festivals.

The 38th episode, The Cyclists, won awards in 1993. It was shown at the "Annecy '93" festival in France. It was also picked as one of "The Best of Annecy '93". This meant it was shown in famous museums and film archives in North America.

The 44th episode, The Billiards, also won prizes. It was chosen for the "Annecy '95" festival. In March 1997, it won two awards at the World Animation Celebration in California:

• 1st prize for best animation in a TV series.
• 2nd prize for best stop-motion animation.

The 50th episode, Playing Cards, was also chosen for the "Annecy '99" TV competition.

Home Videos

For a long time, the first 35 episodes were available on VHS tapes. In the early 2000s, they were released on DVD. The newer episodes came out on DVD in 2005. Some older episodes were hard to find on DVD at first because of legal reasons. But they finally came out in 2007.

English Version

In 1999, a company in South Korea called AIF Asia made an English version of Pat & Mat. This was for learning purposes. This English version included episodes 1 to 49. It was first sold on 10 VHS tapes. Later, in 2003, it was re-released on 10 DVD discs.

• There are at least two books based on the series.
• In 2007, a Czech company announced they would make a Pat & Mat video game. The game came out in the Czech Republic in 2009 and in other European countries in 2010. It was removed from Steam in July 2020.
• You can also buy lots of Pat & Mat stuff. This includes games, dolls, key rings, office supplies, posters, and T-shirts. In some Dutch supermarkets, you can even find Pat & Mat food!
