Patrick Bosco McFadden (born 26 March 1965) is a British politician. He has been the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster since July 2024. He is a member of the Labour Party. Pat McFadden has also been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Wolverhampton South East since 2005.

Before becoming an MP, he worked as a special adviser to the Prime Minister. During his time in Parliament, he has held several important roles. These include junior minister positions and roles in the "shadow cabinet" when his party was not in power.

In 2009, he became the Minister of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. He also served as Minister of State for Employment Relations and Postal Affairs from 2007 to 2009. From 2006 to 2007, he was the Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Office.

After the Labour Party won the 2024 general election, Pat McFadden returned to government. He was appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for Intergovernmental Relations.

Early Life and Education

Patrick McFadden was born on 26 March 1965 in Paisley, Scotland. His parents, James and Annie McFadden, were from County Donegal in Ireland and spoke Irish. As a child, Pat often visited County Donegal.

He went to Holy Cross RC Primary School and Holyrood Secondary School in Glasgow. From 1983 to 1987, he studied at the University of Edinburgh. He earned a Master of Arts (MA) degree in politics. While at university, he was the chair of Scottish Labour Students from 1986 to 1987.

Early Career in Politics

In 1988, Pat McFadden started working as a researcher for Donald Dewar. Dewar was then the Labour Party's spokesperson for Scottish Affairs.

In 1993, he became a speechwriter and policy adviser for the Labour leader, John Smith. Before he became an MP, he worked as an adviser for Tony Blair. He was Blair's Political Secretary from 2002 until 2005.

Parliamentary Journey

First Years as an MP (2005–2010)

Pat McFadden was first elected as the MP for Wolverhampton South East in the 2005 general election. He won with a large number of votes.

In 2006, he was appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Office. This role helps the government run smoothly. In 2007, he was promoted to Minister of State in the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. Here, he was in charge of employment relations and postal services.

In 2008, he became a deputy to Lord Mandelson, who was the Business Secretary. This was important because Lord Mandelson was a member of the House of Lords and could not speak in the House of Commons. Pat McFadden represented the department there. He also became a member of the Privy Council, a group of senior advisors to the King.

He was re-elected as MP for Wolverhampton South East in the 2010 general election.

Time in Opposition (2010–2024)

After the Labour Party lost the 2010 election, Pat McFadden became the Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills. This meant he was the main spokesperson for business issues for the opposition party.

Later, in 2014, he was appointed as the shadow minister for Europe by Labour leader Ed Miliband. He kept this role when Jeremy Corbyn became leader in 2015. However, he was removed from this role in 2016 due to disagreements with the party leadership.

He continued to serve as an MP and was re-elected in the 2015, 2017, and 2019 general elections.

In 2020, the new Labour leader, Sir Keir Starmer, appointed Pat McFadden as Shadow Economic Secretary to the Treasury. This role focuses on economic matters for the opposition. In 2021, he was promoted to Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

In 2023, he became the Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He also took on the role of Labour Party National Campaign Coordinator.

Return to Government (2024–Present)

In the 2024 general election, Pat McFadden was re-elected as MP for Wolverhampton South East. After the Labour Party's victory, Sir Keir Starmer appointed him as the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He also became the Minister for Intergovernmental Relations. These are important roles in the new government.

Political Views

Pat McFadden is known for his views that are considered to be in the centre-right of the Labour Party. He is also a vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel.

Views on Brexit

Pat McFadden voted in favour of the law that started the process for the UK to leave the European Union. However, he was against leaving the EU without a deal. He believes that the UK should have a close trading relationship with the European Union.

Personal Life

Pat McFadden is married to Marianna, and they have a son and a daughter. He is a fan of the football club Celtic F.C..
