Patrick Bosco McFadden (born 26 March 1965) is a British politician. He is a member of the Labour Party. Since July 2024, he has been the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. This is a senior role in the UK government.
He has also been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Wolverhampton South East since 2005. An MP is someone elected to represent their local area in the UK Parliament. Before becoming an MP, he worked for the Prime Minister. He has held many different jobs in government and in the opposition.

Early Life and Education
Patrick McFadden was born on 26 March 1965 in Paisley, Scotland. His parents, James and Annie, were from County Donegal in Ireland. As a child, Pat often visited County Donegal.
He went to Holy Cross RC Primary School and Holyrood Secondary School in Glasgow. Later, he studied at the University of Edinburgh from 1983 to 1987. He earned an MA degree there.
Early Career in Politics
After university, Pat McFadden became involved in politics. In 1986–87, he was the chair of Scottish Labour Students. This group is for young Labour Party members in Scotland.
In 1988, he started working as a researcher for Donald Dewar. Dewar was a leading Labour politician at the time. In 1993, McFadden became a speechwriter and policy adviser for the Labour leader, John Smith.
Before he became an MP, he worked for Tony Blair. Blair was the Prime Minister at the time. From 2002 to 2005, McFadden was the Prime Minister's Political Secretary. This role involves advising the Prime Minister on political matters.
Parliamentary Career
Becoming an MP
Pat McFadden was first elected as an MP in 2005. He won the election for the area of Wolverhampton South East. He received 59.4% of the votes.
Early Government Roles (2006–2010)
In 2006, he became a Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Office. This is a junior government role. In 2007, he was promoted to Minister of State. He worked in the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. His job involved looking after employment and postal services.
In 2008, he became the deputy to Lord Mandelson, who was the Business Secretary. This was important because Lord Mandelson was a member of the House of Lords, not the House of Commons. So, Pat McFadden represented the department in the House of Commons. He also joined the Privy Council, a group of senior advisers to the King.
He was re-elected as MP for Wolverhampton South East in the 2010 general election.
In Opposition (2010–2024)
After the Labour Party lost the 2010 election, Pat McFadden served in the "shadow cabinet." This is a group of opposition MPs who challenge the government. He was the Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Backbenches and Shadow Minister Roles
From 2010 to 2014, he was on the "backbenches." This means he was an MP but did not hold a senior role in the shadow cabinet.
In 2014, Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, made him the shadow minister for Europe. He kept this role when Jeremy Corbyn became leader in 2015.
He was re-elected as an MP in the 2015 general election. In 2016, he left his shadow minister role.
Return to the Frontbench (2020–2024)
Pat McFadden was re-elected in the 2017 and 2019 general elections. In 2020, Sir Keir Starmer became the new Labour leader. Starmer appointed McFadden as Shadow Economic Secretary to the Treasury. This role involves looking at economic policies for the opposition.
In 2021, he was promoted to Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. In 2023, he became Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He also became the Labour Party's National Campaign Coordinator. This job involves planning and running election campaigns for the party.
Return to Government (2024–Present)
In the 2024 general election, Pat McFadden was re-elected again. The Labour Party won the election. Keir Starmer became Prime Minister.
McFadden was then appointed Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He also became the Minister for Intergovernmental Relations. These are important roles in the new government.
Political Views
Pat McFadden is known for being part of the more central group within the Labour Party. He is also a vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel. This group works to strengthen ties between the Labour Party and Israel.
Views on Brexit
McFadden voted for the law that started the process of the UK leaving the European Union (Brexit). However, he was against leaving without a deal. He believes the UK should have a close trading relationship with the European Union.
Personal Life
Pat McFadden is married to Marianna. They have a son and a daughter. He is a fan of the Scottish football team Celtic F.C..
