Patrick Henry County, Virginia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Imagine a place that used to be on a map, but isn't anymore! That's a bit like Patrick Henry County. It was once a part of Virginia, a state in the United States, but it no longer exists as a single county today.

What Was Patrick Henry County?

Patrick Henry County was created a long time ago, in 1777. This was just after the United States became independent. It was formed from a larger area called Pittsylvania County.

This new county was named after a very important person: Patrick Henry. He was a famous patriot from Virginia. A patriot is someone who loves and strongly supports their country. At that time, Patrick Henry was serving as the very first Governor of Virginia. A governor is like the main leader of a state.

How Did Patrick Henry County Change?

Patrick Henry County didn't last forever as one piece. In 1790, it was divided into two separate counties. The western part became Patrick County. The rest of the land became Henry County.

Both of these new counties were also named in honor of Patrick Henry. So, even though the original Patrick Henry County no longer exists, its name lives on in two different places!
