Patrick Makau Musyoki, born on March 2, 1985, is a famous long-distance runner from Kenya. He once held the world record for the marathon, which is a very long running race. In 2011, he ran the Berlin Marathon in an amazing time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 38 seconds. This was the fastest marathon ever run at that time! Patrick Makau's Running Journey
Patrick Makau started running in 2001. He quickly showed his talent in long-distance races. In 2006, he took part in the 2006 IAAF World Road Running Championships.
Early Half Marathon Success
In 2007, Makau finished second at the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon. He ran a very fast time of 59 minutes and 13 seconds. Only Samuel Wanjiru, who set a new world record in that race, was faster. Patrick also won silver medals at the 2007 IAAF World Road Running Championships and the 2008 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. Both times, he was also part of the Kenyan team that won the team gold medal.
In 2008, he won the City-Pier-City Loop race. The next year, 2009, he won the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon again. His time of 58 minutes and 52 seconds was the second fastest half marathon ever at that point.
Marathon Debut and First Major Wins
Patrick Makau ran his first full marathon in 2009 at the Rotterdam Marathon. He finished fourth with a strong time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 14 seconds.
In 2010, he won the City-Pier-City Loop for a second time. Later that year, he greatly improved his marathon time to 2 hours, 4 minutes, and 48 seconds to win the Rotterdam Marathon. This made him the fourth fastest marathon runner in history. He then focused on the Berlin Marathon. He won this race too, beating Geoffrey Mutai in a close finish. For his great runs that year, he was named the AIMS World Athlete of the Year.
In 2011, Makau competed in the 2011 London Marathon. Even after falling halfway through the race, he kept going. He finished third, just behind Martin Lel, with a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 45 seconds.
World Record Breaking Run
On September 25, 2011, Patrick Makau ran in the Berlin Marathon. Many people were excited to see him race against Haile Gebrselassie, who was the world record holder at the time. Makau pulled ahead of Gebrselassie after the halfway point. He then pushed himself to finish in an amazing world record time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 38 seconds. This beat the old record by 21 seconds!
Before the race, Makau had said he wanted to bring the marathon world record back to Kenya. After his win, he shared that he felt tired in the morning. But once the race started, his body felt good. He began to think about breaking the record around the 32-kilometer mark. He said the last 10 kilometers were very tough.
His world record stood for two years. In 2013, another Kenyan runner, Wilson Kipsang Kiprotich, broke it at the same Berlin Marathon. Kipsang lowered the record by another 15 seconds.

2012 Season Highlights
In February 2012, Patrick Makau was expected to win the Granollers Half Marathon. However, he lost in a close finish to Carles Castillejo because of cold weather. He also started the 2012 London Marathon but had to stop due to an injury. This meant he could not be chosen for the Olympic team that year. In May, he ran in the Great Manchester Run and finished fifth.
Later in October, Makau ran the Frankfurt Marathon. Even though he felt uncomfortable during the race, he managed to take the lead from Deressa Chimsa. He held on to win the race with a time of 2 hours, 6 minutes, and 8 seconds.
2013 London Marathon
In 2013, Makau raced in the London Marathon again. He was not in his best shape. He fell behind the main group early in the race and finished 11th. His time was 2 hours, 14 minutes, and 10 seconds, which was much slower than his world record.
