Patrick Mouratoglou (born 8 June 1970) is a famous French tennis coach, sports expert, and businessman. He is best known for coaching many top tennis players. In 1996, he started the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy. He has helped many rising stars, including Marcos Baghdatis, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, and Holger Rune. From 2012 to 2022, he was the coach for the legendary player Serena Williams.

Early Life and Tennis Dreams

Patrick Mouratoglou was born in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. His father is Greek and his mother is French. Patrick started playing tennis when he was just four years old. He dreamed of becoming a professional tennis player. However, his parents thought that a career in tennis was too risky. They encouraged him to choose a different path.

Patrick Mouratoglou's Coaching Journey

Starting the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy

Patrick Mouratoglou was inspired to create a tennis academy because he didn't get the chance to pursue his own tennis dreams. He wanted to give young players the opportunities he missed. He looked up to Nick Bollettieri's famous tennis academy.

In 1996, Mouratoglou teamed up with experienced coach Bob Brett. They opened a tennis academy in Montreuil, France. It was first called the Bob Brett Academy. For six years, Brett taught Mouratoglou the basics of coaching. After Brett left, Mouratoglou renamed it the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy. In 2016, the academy moved to Biot, on the beautiful French Riviera.

Coaching Rising Stars (1999–2012)

Mouratoglou began coaching professional players in 1999. One of his first students was 14-year-old Marcos Baghdatis. Baghdatis wasn't naturally athletic, but with Mouratoglou's help, he became a junior world No. 1. He won the boys' title at the Australian Open in 2003. Baghdatis also reached the final of the 2006 Australian Open and became world No. 8 in the ATP rankings.

In 2007, Mouratoglou started coaching 16-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Within two years, she reached the top 30 in the WTA rankings. After their partnership ended, he coached Aravane Rezaï and Yanina Wickmayer. Rezaï had a great year in 2010, winning the Madrid Open and entering the world's top 20. Wickmayer also reached a career-high ranking of world No. 12.

Mouratoglou also coached Laura Robson and Jérémy Chardy during this period.

Coaching Serena Williams (2012–2022)

In 2012, Patrick Mouratoglou began coaching Serena Williams. This happened after she had a rare first-round loss at the 2012 French Open. With Mouratoglou as her coach, Williams achieved amazing success.

During this time, Mouratoglou also invited young talents to his academy. In 2014, 10-year-old Coco Gauff came to train. He was impressed by her strong will and athletic ability. In 2015, Stefanos Tsitsipas also started training at the academy.

Coaching Simona Halep and Holger Rune (2022–Present)

In 2022, Simona Halep began training with Mouratoglou. Later that year, Mouratoglou started coaching 19-year-old Holger Rune. Under his guidance, Rune won his first Masters 1000 title. He beat Novak Djokovic in the final of the 2022 Paris Masters.

Rune and Mouratoglou have worked together on and off. They have reunited a few times to continue their coaching relationship.

Other Projects and Contributions

Patrick Mouratoglou is also a sports commentator for channels like ESPN and Eurosport. He has written two books about coaching and his life. In 2019, he launched a mobile game called Tennis Manager.

In 2014, he started the Champ'seed Foundation. This foundation helps young tennis players who don't have enough money to become professionals. Some famous players supported by the foundation include Coco Gauff, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Holger Rune.

In 2017, Mouratoglou helped create the French Riviera Open. This is an annual wheelchair tennis tournament held at his academy. In 2020, he co-founded the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS). This is an exciting exhibition tennis tournament. Mouratoglou created UTS to make tennis more interesting for younger fans.

He was also featured in a 2020 Netflix docuseries called The Playbook.

Personal Life

Patrick Mouratoglou has three children with his ex-wife, Clarisse: Raphaël, Charlotte, and Juliette. He also has two daughters with his second wife, Ada.
