Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Patrick Young (born August 29, 1584 – died September 7, 1652) was a very smart Scottish scholar. He was also known as Patricius Junius. Patrick worked as a special librarian for two kings: King James VI and I and King Charles I. He was famous for his deep knowledge of the Bible and the writings of early Christian leaders.

Life Story

Patrick Young was born in a place called Seton, in Angus, Scotland. His father, Peter Young, was a teacher for King James when the king was young. Patrick went to the University of St. Andrews and finished his studies in 1603.

After university, he became a librarian and secretary for George Lloyd, who later became an important bishop. Patrick also studied at Oxford in 1605. He became a chaplain, which is a type of church leader, at All Souls College.

Patrick then worked as a librarian for Prince Henry, King James I, and King Charles I, one after another. At the same time, he helped write important letters for the kings to other countries. He also worked as a Latin secretary for Bishop John Williams in 1624. Patrick was a rector (a church leader) in Llanynys, Denbighshire, starting in 1623. He was also a rector in Hayes, Middlesex, from 1623 to 1647.

His Work and Books

Patrick Young did many important things with books and old writings.

Helping King James

In 1605, King James sent his book, Historie of the Churche, to Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury. King James had written this book many years before. Patrick Young had helped copy the book. The king joked that the language in the copy got a bit mixed up because of how it was copied!

Cataloging Old Books

Around 1622, Patrick made a list of all the old books and papers in Salisbury Cathedral. In the same year, King James asked him to look at old writings in English churches and make notes for him.

Working with Greek Texts

Patrick was an excellent scholar of the Greek language. In 1629, a large collection of about 250 Greek writings, called Codex Baroccianus, was given to the Bodleian Library. Patrick was asked to make a list of all these important Greek texts.

He was also given the job of checking and improving a very old and important Bible text called the Codex Alexandrinus, which was part of the Septuagint (the Greek Old Testament). He also helped Brian Walton with his Polyglot Bible by adding notes to it.

His Publications

In 1633 and 1637, Patrick published the first printed versions of two letters by Clement of Rome to the Corinthians. In 1637, he published a catena, which is a collection of comments from early Greek Christian writers, about the Book of Job. This work was thought to be by Nicetas. In 1639, he published a commentary on the Canticles, based on the work of Gilbert Foliot.

After Patrick Young passed away, his collection of books went to another scholar named Thomas Gale.
