Patroclus facts for kids
Patroclus (also spelled Patroklos) was an important hero in Greek mythology. He is famous for his role in the great Trojan War, which is told in Homer's epic poem, the Iliad.
Patroclus was the son of Menoetius, a king from Opuntian Locris. While his father is known, ancient stories don't always agree on who his mother was. Patroclus was best friends with the mighty Greek warrior, Achilles. Their friendship was very strong and important to both of them.

Patroclus and the Trojan War
The Trojan War was a long and famous conflict between the Achaeans (Greeks) and the city of Troy. Many heroes fought in this war, and Patroclus was one of them.
Achilles' Anger and Patroclus' Plan
During the war, Achilles, the greatest Greek warrior, became very angry with Agamemnon, the leader of the Greek army. Because of this anger, Achilles refused to fight. Without Achilles, the Greek army began to lose battles badly.
Patroclus saw how much the Greeks were suffering. He decided to do something brave to help them. He secretly put on Achilles' famous armour and took his weapons. His plan was to make the Trojans think that Achilles had returned to battle. This would scare the Trojans and give the Greeks hope.
Patroclus' Last Battle
Patroclus bravely led the Greek soldiers into battle, wearing Achilles' armour. The Trojans were indeed terrified, believing Achilles was back. Patroclus fought with great courage, pushing the Trojans back and saving many Greek ships from being burned.
However, during the fierce fighting, Patroclus faced the mighty Trojan prince, Hector. Hector was the greatest warrior of Troy. In a tragic battle, Hector managed to defeat and kill Patroclus.
Achilles' Revenge
The death of Patroclus deeply saddened and angered Achilles. His grief was immense. This terrible loss made Achilles forget his anger at Agamemnon. He became filled with a powerful desire for revenge against the Trojans, especially Hector.
Achilles returned to the battlefield, fighting with incredible fury. He eventually found Hector and killed him in a famous duel. Patroclus' death was a major turning point in the Trojan War, leading to Achilles' return and ultimately, the fall of Troy.
