Pattee Byng, the 2nd Viscount Torrington, was an important British officer and politician. He was born on May 25, 1699, and passed away on January 23, 1747. He served as a Captain in the army. Later, he became a member of the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government. He also held a special role called Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard under King George II.

Pattee Byng's Life and Career

Pattee Byng was the oldest son of George Byng, 1st Viscount Torrington. His mother was Margaret Master. In 1712, Pattee joined the British Army as a Cornet, which was a junior officer rank. He served in the Royal Horse Guards. From 1715 to 1718, he was a Captain. He left the army when his father was given the title of Viscount Torrington. This title made his father a member of the peerage, a special group of noble families.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

In 1723, Pattee Byng took his father's place as a Member of Parliament for Plymouth. A Member of Parliament (MP) is someone elected to represent people in the government. In 1724, he became the Treasurer of the Navy. This important job meant he managed the money for the navy for ten years.

At the 1727 general election, he was elected as an MP for Bedfordshire. He continued as Treasurer of the Navy until 1733. During this time, his father was the First Lord of the Admiralty, a very senior navy position. In 1732, Pattee Byng became a Privy Councillor. This meant he was a trusted advisor to the King. He also became a Commissioner for Greenwich Hospital, a home for retired sailors.

Moving to the House of Lords

In 1733, Pattee Byng's father passed away. Pattee then inherited the title of Viscount Torrington. This meant he had to leave his seat in the House of Commons. Instead, he took his place in the House of Lords, another part of the British government.

In 1734, he was given the job of Vice-Treasurer and Paymaster General of Ireland. These roles involved managing money for Ireland. By 1746, he also became the Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard. This was a ceremonial role, leading the King's personal bodyguards. He held both of these positions until he passed away.

Family Life

On June 11, 1724, Pattee Byng married Lady Charlotte Montagu. She was the fourth daughter of Charles Montagu, 1st Duke of Manchester. Lady Charlotte later became a Lady of the Bedchamber to Augusta, Princess of Wales. This meant she was a close attendant to the Princess.

Pattee and Charlotte had two sons:

  • George Byng (born 1728, died 1730)
  • Frederick Byng (born 1735, died 1736)

Sadly, both of their sons passed away when they were very young. In 1727, Pattee's father gave him the family home, Southill Park, in Bedfordshire.

Death and Succession

Pattee Byng passed away on January 23, 1747. He was buried in the family vault at the Church of All Saints in Southill. His wife, Charlotte, lived until September 14, 1759.

Since Pattee Byng had no children who survived him, his title passed to his younger brother. His brother, George Byng, 3rd Viscount Torrington, became the 3rd Viscount Torrington.
