The Story of Patties Foods
How It All Started
Patties Foods began as Patties Bakeries. It was first a small cake shop in Lakes Entrance, Australia. In August 1966, Peter and Annie Rijs bought the bakery. They had moved to Australia from the Netherlands in 1956.
In 1967, the Rijs family started making pies and bread rolls. More and more people wanted their products. This led to new shops and bakeries being built or bought. In 1985, a new factory was built in Bairnsdale. This is where Patties Foods still makes its products today.
Growing Bigger
The company kept growing over the years. In 1986, Patties started selling its products in Melbourne. By 1995, they were even sending products to New Zealand. In 1993, Patties launched a Mexican food range called Arriba.
As sales of pastries grew, Patties decided to focus on them. In 1996, they sold their bread business. This allowed them to make even more pastries. The factory in Bairnsdale was expanded several times. In 1998, a big renovation added new equipment, like a special freezer. In 2000, a new production line was added. This helped them make many more pasties, sausage rolls, and finger foods.
New Brands Join the Family
In 2003, Patties Foods bought some well-known Australian brands from another company called Simplot. These brands included Four'n Twenty, Herbert Adams, and Nanna's. By 2004, Patties was making these products in their Bairnsdale factory.
Patties Foods was recognized for its success. In 2006, they were added to the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame. They also joined the Gippsland Business Awards Hall of Fame.
Changes in Ownership
In 2006, Patties Foods became a public company. This meant people could buy shares in the company on the Australian Securities Exchange. The Rijs brothers, sons of the founders, still owned a large part of the company. In 2007, Patties bought two more businesses, Chefs Pride and Creative Gourmet. They also started making gluten-free foods.
In early 2015, there was a recall of Nanna's frozen berries. These berries had come from China and Chile. The recall happened after some people became unwell. In November 2016, a company called Pacific Equity Partners bought Patties. This meant Patties was no longer listed on the stock exchange. In September 2022, Patties was sold again to another company called PAG.
