Paul Rothchild's Life and Music Career
Early Life and First Steps in Music
Paul Rothchild was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey. He finished Teaneck High School in 1954. His family loved music. His mother was an opera singer. Paul himself studied how to lead classical music groups.
Paul started his music career in Boston. He recorded local folk artists. Sometimes he released their music on his own record label. In 1964, he became a producer for Jac Holzman's Elektra Records. He worked with talented recording engineers. These included Bruce Botnick and John Haeny.
In late 1964, Paul found Paul Butterfield and his band. Their first recording attempt was not released right away. But a later try led to the band's first album. It was called The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Paul also produced their second album, East-West. This album was very important in the 1960s. It was one of the first examples of acid rock music. The early members of the Butterfield Blues Band joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.
Producing Famous Bands and Artists
By the mid-1960s, Paul Rothchild was well-known in the Los Angeles music scene. His house in Laurel Canyon was a gathering place. Many future music stars of the 1960s and 1970s spent time there. He produced the first song demo for Crosby, Stills, & Nash. This demo helped them get a record deal.
Paul Rothchild is perhaps best known for working with the Doors. He produced their first five albums. He did not produce their last album with Jim Morrison, L.A. Woman. Paul left that project because he disagreed with the band's music ideas.
He also produced music for many other artists. These include John Sebastian, Joni Mitchell, and Neil Young. He worked with Janis Joplin on her last album, Pearl. He also produced her only number one song, "Me and Bobby McGee".
In the 1970s, Paul produced the first two albums for the band Outlaws. He also worked with Bonnie Raitt and Elliott Murphy. He produced the music for the film The Rose. This movie was loosely based on Janis Joplin's life. Paul also produced the music for Oliver Stone's film The Doors. He even had a small role in the movie. The actor Michael Wincott played Paul in the film.
Later Years and Passing
In 1990, Paul Rothchild was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was planning a big party for his 60th birthday. However, he passed away on March 30, 1995. He was 59 years old, just 19 days before his birthday.
