Becoming a Major League Pitcher
Paul first played in the major leagues in 1953. By 1955, he became a regular pitcher for the Tigers. From 1956 to 1959, he had four great seasons. He won 15, 14, 15, and 14 games each year. During these years, he usually pitched about 40 games. He also started about 33 of those games.
Paul was one of the best pitchers in the American League. He was good at not letting other teams get many hits. He was also among the top pitchers for innings pitched and strikeouts. He completed many games by himself. He also did not give up many walks. In 1959, he started more games than any other pitcher in his league.
Career Statistics

A Memorable Game
On June 15, 1963, Paul was traded to the Los Angeles Angels. A month later, on July 31, 1963, something unusual happened. Paul was pitching against the Cleveland Indians.
