Paul Gillmor's Early Life and Education

Paul Gillmor was born in Tiffin, Ohio, in 1939. He grew up in a town called Old Fort. His father owned a trucking business there.

Paul went to Old Fort High School and finished in 1957. He then studied at Ohio Wesleyan University, earning a degree in 1961. Later, in 1964, he received a law degree from the University of Michigan.

After college, Gillmor joined the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a Judge Advocate, which is like a lawyer for the military. He served from 1965 to 1966 and reached the rank of captain. After his military service, he started working as a lawyer.

Paul Gillmor's Family Life

Paul Gillmor first married Brenda Lee Luckey. Sadly, she died in a car accident in 1972. They had two daughters named Linda and Julie.

In 1983, Gillmor married Karen Lako. Karen also became a politician, serving in the Ohio Senate. Together, Paul and Karen had three sons: Paul Michael, Adam, and Connor.

Paul Gillmor's Political Career

Paul Gillmor had a long career in politics. He served in both Ohio state government and the U.S. Congress.

Serving in the Ohio State Senate

In 1967, Gillmor was elected as an Ohio state senator. He stayed in this role for many years, until 1988. For 10 years, he was the leader of the Republican members in the Ohio Senate. He even served as the president of the state senate from 1981 to 1982 and again from 1985 to 1988.

In 1986, he tried to become the governor but did not win the primary election.

Joining the U.S. Congress

In 1988, Paul Gillmor decided to run for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. The person who held the seat for 30 years, Del Latta, was retiring. Del Latta wanted his son, Bob Latta, to take his place. However, Gillmor won the Republican primary election against Bob Latta by only 27 votes!

After winning the primary, Gillmor was easily elected to Congress in November. He represented Ohio's 5th congressional district. He was reelected nine more times because his district usually voted for Republicans. In 1992, he ran for reelection without anyone running against him.

Gillmor was known for being a moderate Republican. This means he often worked with members from both political parties. For example, he worked with Congressman Barney Frank to create a law. This law aimed to stop large stores like Wal-Mart from owning banks.

Authorities investigated and determined that he died from an accidental fall. There was no foul play involved.

After his death, a special election was held to fill his seat in Congress. Bob Latta, the person Gillmor had narrowly beaten in the 1988 primary, won the election.
