Serving in the Ohio State Senate
In 1967, Gillmor was elected as an Ohio state senator. He stayed in this role for many years, until 1988. For 10 years, he was the leader of the Republican members in the Ohio Senate. He even served as the president of the state senate from 1981 to 1982 and again from 1985 to 1988.

Del Latta wanted his son, Bob Latta, to take his place. However, Gillmor won the Republican primary election against Bob Latta by only 27 votes!
After winning the primary, Gillmor was easily elected to Congress in November. He represented Ohio's 5th congressional district. He was reelected nine more times because his district usually voted for Republicans. In 1992, he ran for reelection without anyone running against him.
