The community of Paul Smiths got its name from a famous hotel. This hotel was called the Paul Smith's Hotel, or sometimes the Saint Regis House. It was started in 1859 by a man named Apollos "Paul" Smith. His hotel was one of the very first vacation spots in the wild Adirondacks area.

The original hotel burned down in 1930. Later, Paul Smith's College was built on the same spot. This college was created with money from Paul Smith's son, Phelps, after he passed away in 1937.

Paul Smiths is also home to some interesting historic places. You can find Osgood Pond here, which is near Northbrook Lodge. This lodge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. Another famous spot is White Pine Camp, which was once the summer home for President Calvin Coolidge.

Where is Paul Smiths? Geography and Location

Paul Smiths is located in the southern part of the town of Brighton. It sits between two lakes: Lower St. Regis Lake to the south and Osgood Pond to the north. This area is in the southern part of Franklin County. The special area known as the Paul Smiths CDP mostly covers the campus of Paul Smith's College.

Two main roads pass through or near Paul Smiths:

  • New York State Route 30 goes north about 32 miles (51 km) to Malone. Malone is the main town in Franklin County. This road also goes south about 26 miles (42 km) to Tupper Lake.
  • New York State Route 86 starts in Paul Smiths. It travels about 12 miles (19 km) southeast to the village of Saranac Lake.

The Paul Smiths CDP covers about 0.39 square miles (1.01 square kilometers) in total. A good portion of this area is water, about 0.14 square miles (0.35 square kilometers). This water part includes a section of Lower St. Regis Lake.
