The Peaceful River is a small river found on the eastern side of Attu Island in Alaska. It got its name from the United States Army during World War II, when soldiers were stationed on the island. The river starts at a place called North Pass and flows east. It even goes under the Attu Airfield before emptying into the huge Pacific Ocean.

This river is a special home for many different kinds of birds and fish that live only on Attu Island. Keeping rivers like this healthy is important for all the amazing wildlife that depend on them.

Where is the Peaceful River Located?

The Peaceful River is in a very remote part of Alaska, on Attu Island. Attu Island is the westernmost island in the Aleutian Islands chain. This chain of islands stretches out into the Pacific Ocean.

Journey of the River

The river begins its journey at North Pass. From there, it flows towards the east. It passes under the old Attu Airfield, which was an important site during World War II. Soon after, the river reaches its end, flowing into the vast Pacific Ocean.

Amazing Wildlife of Peaceful River

The Peaceful River is a lively place, full of different animals. It's especially known for its birds and fish. Scientists often study the river to learn more about these creatures.

Birds of the River

One exciting discovery happened in 1983. A nest of black-backed wagtails was found under an old wooden bridge over the river. This was a very important find! It was one of the first times these birds were known to successfully build nests and raise their young in Alaska. This shows how special Attu Island is for bird watching.

Fish in the Water

The Peaceful River is also a great place for different types of salmon. A study was done to see how many salmon live in the river. It found that pink salmon were the most common type. Over 33,000 pink salmon were counted in the river during the survey!

Helping Salmon Thrive

The same study also suggested ways to help even more salmon live in the Peaceful River. It said that keeping the "culverts" in good shape would help. Culverts are like big pipes that let water flow under roads. Also, removing any concrete trash from the river would make it a better home for the salmon. This shows how important it is to keep our rivers clean!
