Where Rivers Begin
Did you know that mountains are often where rivers start? Peak Mountain is super important because it's a "headwater" for several rivers. This means that the first small streams of these rivers begin on its slopes.
- The Elk River starts on the northwestern side of Peak Mountain.
- The Linville River begins on the southwestern slopes. It shares this starting point with nearby Sugar Mountain and Flattop Mountain.
- The Watauga River starts on the southeastern slopes. It shares its beginnings with the famous Grandfather Mountain.
Fun Things to Do
Even though there aren't official hiking trails directly up Peak Mountain, there are still exciting things to do nearby!
Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Zipline
On the northern side of Peak Mountain, in the town of Seven Devils, you'll find Hawksnest Snow Tubing and Zipline. This place is a lot of fun!
- You can go ziplining all year round. Ziplining is like flying through the air on a cable!
- In late fall and winter, you can enjoy snow tubing. This is where you slide down snowy hills on a big inner tube.
Nearby Hiking
While no official trails go up Peak Mountain itself, a famous hiking trail called Profile Trail starts nearby. This trail is part of Grandfather Mountain.
- The Profile Trail begins on NC Highway 105.
- You will need a permit to hike this trail, so make sure to check the rules before you go.
