The show was broadcast in three parts on the ABC network. These episodes aired on November 16, 17, and 19, 1978. All three parts were very popular. They were among the top ten most-watched shows during their airing week. About 80 million people watched some or all of the series.

Main Characters in Pearl

This section lists the main actors and the characters they played in the miniseries.

What is the Story of Pearl?

The story of Pearl takes place as the Japanese First Air Fleet sails towards Hawaii. People on the military bases and civilians are living their daily lives.

Key Characters and Their Lives

The main characters include Colonel Jason Forrest, an Army MP. He often argues with his wife, Midge. There is also Captain Calvin Lankford, his second-in-command. Other characters include Holly Nagata, a local news writer, and Sergeant Otto Chain, an MP.

On the Navy side, we meet Lieutenant Douglas North and his parents, Commander Michael North and his mother. Douglas also reconnects with Holly Nagata, an old classmate. Their friendship soon turns into a romantic relationship.

The Attack on Pearl Harbor

Everyone's lives are completely changed when the Japanese attack the island. The miniseries shows how this sudden event affects all the characters.

How Was Pearl Made?

To help keep the costs of making the miniseries low, some scenes of the attack were not filmed new. Instead, they used footage that was originally shot for the movie Tora! Tora! Tora!. This helped the creators save money.

The miniseries also used new voice-overs for footage of So Yamamura. He played Isoroku Yamamoto, who was the Japanese commander of the attack.
