The Pearly Wood-Nymph (scientific name: Eudryas unio) is a beautiful type of moth. It belongs to a group of moths called Noctuidae. You can find this moth in many parts of eastern United States. It lives from places like central New Hampshire and southern Ontario all the way down to southern Florida. Out west, it can be seen in the eastern Great Plains, going south to southern Texas and even along the eastern coast of Mexico in Veracruz. There are also some smaller groups of these moths living far away in central Utah and California. The moths in California might even be a special kind of Pearly Wood-Nymph.

The Pearly Wood-Nymph moth is not very big. Its wingspan is usually between 26 and 35 millimeters. That's about the length of a few small coins lined up! Adult moths fly around during the warmer months, typically from May to August.

What Do Pearly Wood-Nymph Caterpillars Eat?

The young Pearly Wood-Nymphs are caterpillars. They love to munch on different plants. Some of their favorite foods include Vitis (which is the plant that grapes grow on), Oenothera biennis (also known as evening primrose), Ludwigia, Lythrum, Decodon verticillatus, and Hibiscus. The caterpillars living in California have been seen eating Epilobium ciliatum and other types of Oenothera plants.
