A Look at History
The town of Pedernales officially started in 1927. This happened during the time when Horacio Vásquez was the President. He chose a famous writer named Sócrates Nolasco to be in charge.
Most of the first people who settled here came from a place called Duvergé. The very first person was Mr. Genaro Pérez Rocha. He was a successful rancher. He then brought the first families to live in Pedernales.
In 1937, a highway was built to connect Pedernales with another town called Oviedo. About 500 men worked together to build this road.
In 1938, Pedernales became a Municipal District. This means it got its own local government.
The name Pedernales comes from the Spanish word pedernal. This word means flint. Flint is a type of stone that makes a spark when you hit it. You can find this stone in the Pedernales River. This river also marks the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

What's the Weather Like?
Pedernales has a semi-arid climate. This means it's usually hot and dry. It gets less rain than many other tropical places. This is because it's located in a "rain shadow." This means mountains block the rain-carrying winds.
The most rain usually falls in September and October. This is when tropical storms can sometimes affect the whole island. Temperatures are generally warmer during the day compared to many other tropical areas.
