Exploring China as a Naturalist
In the years 1750 to 1752, Pehr Osbeck went on an exciting journey. He traveled as a chaplain on a ship called Prins Carl. His destination was Asia, specifically the Canton region of China.
He spent four months in China. During this time, he carefully studied the plants (flora), animals (fauna), and people of the area. When he returned home, he had collected many new plant species. He shared information about more than 600 of these plants with Linnaeus. This information was included in Linnaeus's important book, Species Plantarum, which came out in 1753.
In 1757, Pehr Osbeck published a book about his journey. It was called Dagbok öfwer en ostindisk Resa åren 1750, 1751, 1752. This book was later translated into German in 1762 and English in 1771. In 1758, he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. This was a great honor for his scientific work.
