Pelican Lake is a beautiful lake located in northwestern Ontario, Canada. It is part of a huge water system called the Hudson Bay drainage basin. This means all the water from the lake eventually flows into Hudson Bay!

The lake is special because it's right next to the town of Sioux Lookout. A railway line also crosses the lake and runs along its western side.

About Pelican Lake

Pelican Lake is quite large. It stretches about 8.5 kilometers (5.3 miles) long. It is also about 6.3 kilometers (3.9 miles) wide. The lake sits at an elevation of about 356 meters (1,168 feet) above sea level.

The town center of Sioux Lookout is on the east side of the lake. There is also a railway stop called Pelican on the southwest side. The main railway line, used by trains like the Canadian, goes right across the lake.

How Water Flows Through Pelican Lake

Water is always moving through Pelican Lake. The main river that flows into the lake is the English River. This river enters the lake from the south, coming over an area called the Frog Rapids from Abram Lake.

Another river, which doesn't have a specific name, also flows into Pelican Lake. It comes from Botham Bay on Big Vermillion Lake, located in the northwest part of Pelican Lake.

The English River also flows out of Pelican Lake. It leaves the lake at the northwest corner, going over the Pelican Falls into Lost Lake (Ontario). From there, the water continues its journey through the Winnipeg River and then the Nelson River, finally reaching Hudson Bay.
