The English River is a long river in Ontario, Canada. It flows through the Kenora District and Thunder Bay District in northwestern Ontario. This river is about 615 kilometres (382 mi) long.

Longest Rivers of Canada
The English River was once part of an important canoe route to James Bay.

The English River is part of the Hudson Bay drainage basin. This means all the water from the river and its smaller streams eventually flows into Hudson Bay. The area that drains into the English River is huge, covering about 52,300 square kilometres (20,200 sq mi) of land.

Many hydroelectric power plants are built along the English River. These plants use the power of the flowing water to create electricity.

There is also a small community called English River located on the river. This is where Ontario Highway 17 crosses the river, and where the Scotch River joins it. A railway point with the same name is also nearby, built as part of the Canadian Pacific Railway's main line across Canada.

Where the River Flows

The English River starts from an unnamed lake. It then flows through many other lakes. One important lake it flows through is Lac Seul. Finally, the English River joins the Winnipeg River at Tetu Lake. The Winnipeg River then flows into the Nelson River, which eventually reaches Hudson Bay.

Rivers That Join It

Many smaller rivers flow into the English River. These are called tributaries. Here are some of the main ones:
