Discover Moel yr Henfaes

Moel yr Henfaes stands tall at 621 meters (about 2,037 feet) high. That's like stacking over 100 school buses on top of each other! It's a great spot for adventurers.

Where is Moel yr Henfaes?

This mountain is located in Wales, a beautiful country in the United Kingdom. It sits right on the border between two areas: Denbighshire and Wrexham.

It's part of the Berwyn range, a group of mountains in northeastern Wales. To the south, you can see even higher peaks in the Berwyns, like Cadair Berwyn. If you look north, you'll spot another mountain called Moel Fferna.

What's at the Top?

The very top of Moel yr Henfaes is a special place. It's covered in deep, purple heather plants. The actual summit is a small, rocky area. You'll find a pile of stones there, called a cairn. Hikers often build cairns to mark the highest point or a path. From the top, you can enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

Mountain Classifications: Hewitts and Nuttalls

Moel yr Henfaes is special because it's listed as both a Hewitt and a Nuttall. But what do those names mean?

  • Hewitts: This stands for "Hills in England, Wales and Ireland over Two Thousand feet". To be a Hewitt, a mountain needs to be at least 2,000 feet (610 meters) high. It also needs to have a certain amount of "prominence." Prominence means how much a mountain rises above the land around it. For Hewitts, it's usually 30 meters (98 feet).
  • Nuttalls: These are mountains in England and Wales that are over 2,000 feet (610 meters) high. They also need to have at least 15 meters (49 feet) of prominence. So, Moel yr Henfaes fits both of these cool categories!
