Pengilly is a small community in eastern Itasca County, Minnesota, United States. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a place where people live but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

This community is located in the northern part of Minnesota. It sits in a mining area known as the Iron Range. Pengilly is also found at the northern end of Swan Lake. You can find Pengilly between the cities of Grand Rapids and Hibbing. It's right where two main roads meet: U.S. Highway 169 and Minnesota State Highway 65.

Where is Pengilly Located?

Pengilly is situated right on the border between two areas called Greenway Township and Lone Pine Township.

The community is also located along the northern edge of Swan Lake.

Several other towns are close by, including Nashwauk, Keewatin, Calumet, Marble, and Goodland.

Pengilly is about 19 miles northeast of Grand Rapids. It's also 15 miles west-southwest of Hibbing. And it's 18 miles north of Swan River.

A Look at Pengilly's History

Pengilly got its name from a doctor who lived in the community, John Pengilly.

From 1970 to 1989, a special summer camp was held here. It was called the Youth Leadership Camp (YLC). This camp was for high school students who were deaf. It took place at a spot called Swan Lake Lodge in Pengilly.

The community of Pengilly celebrated its 100th birthday, or centennial, from August 29 to August 31, 2008.
