History of Penney Farms
In 1926, a famous businessman named J. C. Penney founded the community of Penney Farms. He was the person who started the JCPenney department stores. His original idea was to create a special farming village where new farming methods could be tested.
The state of Florida officially recognized Penney Farms as a town in 1927. However, big economic problems like the real estate decline and the stock market crash changed his plans. Because of these challenges, J. C. Penney decided to make the community a home for retired ministers, honoring his father.
Today, this special place is known as the Penney Retirement Community. It covers about 192 acres (0.78 square kilometers). It is now a home for Christian laypeople, as well as clergy and missionaries.
