Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The People's Choice Awards is a fun awards show. It celebrates popular movies, TV shows, music, and more. What makes it special? Regular people get to vote for their favorites! The show has happened every year since 1975. You can usually watch it on CBS. Companies like Procter & Gamble and Mark Burnett help produce the show.

History of the Awards

The People's Choice Awards started in 1975. A person named Bob Stivers created the show. The very first awards honored The Sting as the best movie of 1974. Barbra Streisand was named Favorite Film Actress. John Wayne won for Favorite Film Actor.

The show became very popular quickly. In 1977, over 35 million people watched! That year, Farrah Fawcett won for Favorite Female TV Star. The movie Star Wars was chosen as Favorite Picture. Barbra Streisand and John Wayne won again.

In 1982, Procter & Gamble bought the show from Bob Stivers. They have been the main sponsor since the beginning. In 2008, a new award category was added. It was for Favorite Sci-Fi Show. Stargate Atlantis won that first award.

Award Categories Over Time

The types of awards given out have changed a lot. For example, in 1990, Batman won Favorite All-Around Movie. Tom Cruise won Favorite Movie Actor. There was even a "World Favorite Movie Actor" award, which went to Dustin Hoffman.

Later, in 1997, Rob Reiner received a special honor. By 2006, the awards included new categories. These included Favorite On-Screen Match-Up. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson won for their movie Wedding Crashers. Reese Witherspoon was named Favorite Leading Lady. The band U2 won for Favorite Tour. There was even an award for "Fans Favorite Hair," which went to Faith Hill.

How People Voted

For many years, the People's Choice Awards used Gallup polls. Gallup is a company that asks people questions. They would survey people about their favorite actors, movies, and TV shows. Anyone could be chosen, which made it truly "the people's choice."

Sometimes, the voting was very close. When this happened, there could be a tie! For example, in 2003, two movies tied for Favorite Motion Picture. They were Spider-Man and The Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.

Switch to Online Voting

In 2005, the way people voted changed. Instead of Gallup polls, winners were chosen by online voting. This meant people could vote using the Internet. The nominees (the people or things you could vote for) were picked by a group of experts. This group included editors from Entertainment Weekly magazine.

For the 2006 awards, a company called Knowledge Networks helped pick nominees. They surveyed people of different ages, even those without Internet access. They gave some people special Web TVs to help them vote. This made sure many different voices were heard.

By 2010, another company, Visible Measures, helped find nominees. They looked at how people reacted to online videos. This helped them see what was most popular on the internet.

Similar Awards

You might have heard of other awards that sound similar. In 1988, Nickelodeon started the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. This show is like the People's Choice Awards, but for kids! Even though they have similar names, different companies own them. The Teen Choice Awards are also similar but are not related.
