Plot Summary: How Peter Becomes Spider-Man
At the start of the movie, Peter Parker is a smart teenager. He is accidentally bitten by a spider that has been changed by science. This bite gives him amazing powers. He can now climb walls, shoot spider webs from his wrists, jump very high, move super fast, and become incredibly strong.
Peter lives with his aunt and uncle. His Uncle Ben teaches him a very important lesson: "With great power comes great responsibility." Peter first uses his new powers to win a wrestling match. However, he doesn't get paid as much as he expected. When a criminal steals money from the cashier, Peter doesn't stop him. He is still upset about his pay. Sadly, that same criminal later steals Ben's car, and Ben dies. After this, Peter remembers Ben's words. He decides to become Spider-Man and use his powers to fight crime.
The Green Goblin Appears
Meanwhile, Peter's friend Harry's father, Norman Osborn, faces problems. Norman is the CEO, or head, of his own company. But the company's board removes him from his position. He then tests a new formula on himself. This turns him into the evil Green Goblin. Norman also has a device that lets him fly.
Spider-Man and the Green Goblin start to fight in different parts of the city. During a building fire, the Green Goblin tricks Spider-Man. He pretends to be someone trapped. When Spider-Man tries to rescue the person, he finds the Green Goblin instead. During their fight, Spider-Man gets a cut on his arm.
Later, Peter, Norman, Harry, Peter's friend Mary Jane Watson, and Peter's aunt meet for Thanksgiving. Norman notices the cut on Peter's arm. He then realizes that Peter Parker is actually Spider-Man.
A Dangerous Choice
Norman starts planning to hurt Peter. He scares Peter's Aunt May so much that she has to go to the hospital. There, Peter realizes the Green Goblin knows he likes Mary Jane Watson. He tries to call her, but the Green Goblin has already taken her.
Spider-Man goes to a bridge in New York. The Green Goblin holds Mary Jane in one hand and a group of kids in a bus in the other. He wants Spider-Man to make a terrible choice: save the person he loves or save innocent people. The Green Goblin drops both at the same time. Spider-Man quickly grabs Mary Jane first. Then, he uses his webbing to save the kids. The Green Goblin gets angry and attacks Spider-Man. Many New Yorkers then start throwing things at the Green Goblin, helping Spider-Man.
The Final Battle
The Green Goblin grabs Peter, and they fight inside an old, empty building. The fight is very intense, and Spider-Man gets hurt. Finally, Spider-Man knocks the Green Goblin down. The Green Goblin then reveals that he is Norman Osborn. Spider-Man is very surprised.
Norman distracts Peter and talks to him. At the same time, he tries to make his flying device move to kill Peter. Spider-Man quickly ducks at the last second. The flying device accidentally hits Norman, causing his death. As he is dying, Norman asks Peter not to tell Harry that he was the Green Goblin.
The last scene is at Norman's funeral. During the ceremony, Harry tells Peter that he will get revenge on Spider-Man. He believes Spider-Man killed his father. Mary Jane hints that she loves Peter. But Peter tells her he can only be her friend and always be there for her.
Production Details
A preview for the movie was shown before the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. This preview showed bank robbers flying in a helicopter. They landed on a giant web between the World Trade Center's Twin Towers. After the September 11 attacks, this preview was removed. Because of this, a new scene was added to the movie. In this scene, New Yorkers throw food at the Green Goblin and wave their flags. They yell, "You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us."
