Superhero movies are films about amazing characters called superheroes. These movies often show heroes with special powers who fight bad guys and save the world. Most superhero movies are based on comic books, which are like illustrated stories. Many superhero movies were made during World War II.

The Beginning of Superhero Movies
The very first superhero films were often short series called "serials." These were like mini-movies shown in parts, usually before the main film at a cinema.
- 1940s Serials:
- Adventures of Captain Marvel was a black and white serial from 1941. It was about the hero Captain Marvel from DC Comics.
- In 1944, there was a serial called Captain America, featuring the hero Captain America from Marvel Comics.
- Soon after, the serial Batman came out, based on DC Comics' famous hero, Batman.

Superheroes on TV and the Big Screen
- The 1960s Batman:
- 1980s TV Movies:
- In the 1980s, many television studios started making movies just for TV. Some of these featured Marvel Comics superheroes like Thor and The Incredible Hulk.
- The 1990s and New Heroes:
- The 1990s brought more superhero TV shows based on DC Comics, including The Flash.
- This decade also saw the start of movies about Blade, a superhero from Marvel Comics.
Modern Superhero Blockbusters
- Superman and Batman Return:
- In 1978, Warner Brothers made the big-budget movie Superman. It was so popular that they filmed several sequels (follow-up movies) over the years.
- In 1989, a new Batman movie came out, starring Michael Keaton as Batman and Jack Nicholson as the villain, the Joker. Directors Tim Burton and Joel Shulmacher made three sequels to this film.
- Marvel Heroes Take Over:
- In 2000, 20th Century Fox released X-Men, based on the Marvel Comics team of mutants. This movie also started a successful series of films.
- In 2002, Sony Pictures made Spider-Man, starring Tobey Maguire as Spider-Man and Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin. Sony then filmed Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and Spider-Man 3 in 2007.
- Animated Heroes and Awards:
- Pixar made the animated movie The Incredibles in 2004. It was a funny movie that made fun of some superhero ideas.
- In 2008, Heath Ledger won an Oscar (a very important movie award) for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight. He was the first actor to win an Oscar for a superhero movie. More recently, the movie Black Panther was nominated for an Oscar but did not win.
