Meet Peppy San Badger: His Life and Shows
Peppy San Badger was born in 1974. People also called him “Little Peppy.” He was a sorrel (reddish-brown) American Quarter Horse. Joe Kirk Fulton from Lubbock, Texas bred him. His father was a cutting horse champion named Mr San Peppy. His mother was Sugar Badger. She was a daughter of Grey Badger III.
Peppy San Badger was born at Fulton’s ranch. He started his training there. But then he got sick with strangles, a horse illness. After he got better, he was sold. The King Ranch in South Texas bought him in 1977. He stayed there as a breeding stallion until he passed away.
Training and Early Wins
A famous trainer named Buster Welch trained Peppy San Badger. Buster Welch had also ridden Peppy San Badger's father, Mr San Peppy. Mr San Peppy won big championships in 1974 and 1976.
Peppy San Badger and Buster Welch won the NCHA Futurity in 1977. This was a very important competition. After this win, Buster Welch bought “Little Peppy.” The King Ranch thought they didn't need him. They already owned his famous father, Mr San Peppy.
Buster Welch owned Peppy San Badger for one year. Then he agreed to sell him back to King Ranch. They wanted him for their breeding program. Peppy San Badger, with Buster Welch riding again, won the NCHA Derby in 1978. He also finished 10th in the year-end rankings.
Continuing Success and Hall of Fame
Peppy San Badger kept winning into the 1980s. He was named the 1980 NCHA Reserve World Champion. This means he was the second-best cutting horse that year. He was also added to the NCHA Hall of Fame in December 1980.
In 1981, he won the Open Division of the NCHA finals. Over his show career, he earned a lot of money. He won a total of $172,710. Peppy San Badger was honored again in 2008. He was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame. This is a very special award for horses.
Peppy San Badger: A Great Father to Many Horses
Peppy San Badger became a very important father (sire) to many horses. He had a huge impact on the Quarter Horse breed. For many years, he was the top sire for the NCHA. He held this title until 2003.
He fathered 2,325 foals. These foals were registered with the AQHA over 19 seasons. His children earned over 7,200 points in different horse sports. They also earned more than $25 million in total.

Some of his most famous children include:
