Percy Alliss (born January 8, 1897 – died March 31, 1975) was a famous English professional golfer. He was one of the best players in the 1920s and 1930s. Percy won many golf tournaments in Britain and other parts of Europe. He was also the father of another well-known golfer and TV commentator, Peter Alliss.

Percy Alliss's Golf Journey

Percy Alliss was born in Sheffield, England. He started his golf career in 1919. He became an assistant professional at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in South Wales. His first big wins came in September 1920. He won the Assistant Professionals Tournament and the Welsh Professional Championship. He won both in back-to-back weeks!

Where Percy Played

Percy worked as a golf professional at several clubs. From 1921 to 1923, he was at Clyne Golf Club. Then he moved to Wanstead Golf Club from 1923 to 1925. He even worked in Germany at Wannsee Golf Club in Berlin from 1926 to 1931. After that, he was at Beaconsfield Golf Club (1932-1936) and Temple Newsam Golf Club (1936-1938). In 1939, he joined Ferndown Golf Club in Dorset. He stayed there until he retired in 1967.

Big Tournaments and the Ryder Cup

Percy Alliss did very well in major golf events. He finished in the top six at The Open Championship several times. This happened in 1928, 1929, 1931, 1932, and 1936.

He also played in the Ryder Cup four times. This is a big team competition between golfers from Europe and the United States. Percy played in 1929, 1933, 1935, and 1937. He couldn't play in 1931 because he was living in Germany. The rules said British players had to live in Great Britain then.

A Family Golfing First

Percy's son, Peter Alliss, also became a professional golfer. Peter was also a famous golf writer and TV commentator. He played in the Ryder Cup eight times! Percy and Peter Alliss were the first father and son to ever play in the Ryder Cup. So far, only one other father-son pair has done this.

Record-Breaking Score

In 1935, Percy Alliss won the Italian Open. He shot a total score of 262 over four rounds. This was the lowest 72-hole score ever recorded at that time! It was a truly amazing achievement.

Playing in North America

Percy didn't play much in North America. But he did tie for the lead at the 1931 Canadian Open. He then played an extra 18-hole playoff round against Walter Hagen. Percy unfortunately lost that playoff.
