Peril Strait facts for kids
Peril Strait is a narrow waterway located in southeastern Alaska. It is part of the Alexander Archipelago, a group of islands. This strait separates Chichagof Island to the north from Baranof Island and Catherine Island to the south.
Peril Strait stretches for about 80 kilometers (50 miles). It connects Salisbury Sound in the west to Chatham Strait in the east. The entire strait is within the area known as the City and Borough of Sitka.
What's in a Name? The Story of Peril Strait
The name "Peril Strait" has an interesting history. The original name for this waterway in the local Tlingit language is Shee Káx’. "Shee" is the traditional name for Baranof Island. "Káx’" means "above" or "on top of." So, Shee Káx’ means "on top of Baranof Island."
How the Name "Peril Strait" Came About
The strait was given its Russian name, "Proliv Pogibshy," in 1799. This name came from a difficult event during a fur seal hunting trip. The expedition was led by Alexander Andreyevich Baranov. During this trip, some hunters ate shellfish from the strait that made them very sick. Sadly, many people became ill.
Because of this incident, the strait was later called "Peril Strait." This is the English translation of the Russian name. Nearby places like Poison Cove and Deadman's Reach also got their names from this event.
Peril Strait is an important waterway for ships and boats in Alaska. It has been used for travel and transportation for a long time.
The M/V LeConte Incident
On May 10, 2004, a large ferry called the M/V LeConte had an accident in Peril Strait. The ferry ran aground on a spot called Cozian Reef. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt during the incident.
After the grounding, a big effort was made to rescue the ship. The LeConte was eventually moved to Ketchikan for repairs. Investigations showed that the accident happened because of a mistake by the ship's operator. It was not caused by the natural currents in the strait.
Important Lights for Sailors
In the early 1900s, the Fairway Island Light was very important. This lighthouse was located at the eastern entrance to Peril Strait. It helped guide ships safely through the waters, especially at night or in bad weather.
