Darrel Burton Brewster (born September 1, 1930 – died January 3, 2020) was a talented American athlete. Most people knew him as Pete Brewster. He was famous for playing American football as an end, coaching football, and playing both football and basketball in college.
Pete's College Days
Pete Brewster loved sports from a young age. He played both football and basketball at Portland High School in Portland, Indiana. After high school, he earned a basketball scholarship to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. There, he played basketball for coach Ray Eddy. Pete also joined the varsity football team as a Boilermaker. His football coach was Stuart Holcomb.
Pete's Pro Football Career
Pete Brewster was chosen in the 1952 NFL Draft. He was the 21st player picked overall in the second round. He started his professional career with the Cleveland Browns. In his first year, he played both defense and offense. By his second season, Pete became the main offensive left end for the team. He was also the team's second-best pass receiver in the 1953 season.
Pete was so good that he was picked for the Pro Bowl in both 1955 and 1956. He played as a tight end during these years. After playing seven seasons with the Browns, he moved to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played for the Steelers for two more seasons before ending his playing career.
Coaching After Playing
After he stopped playing football, Pete Brewster became a coach. He coached receivers for two different teams. He worked with the Kansas City Chiefs and later the Minnesota Vikings. While coaching for the Kansas City Chiefs, Pete helped them win a Super Bowl ring in Super Bowl IV. This was a huge achievement for him as a coach!
Life After Football
After his coaching career, Pete Brewster retired from football. He lived in Peculiar, Missouri, which is near Kansas City. His amazing football achievements were recognized when he was added to the Indiana Football Hall of Fame. Pete Brewster passed away in Belton, Missouri, on January 3, 2020. He was 89 years old.
